The Engineer’s Approach to Business Transformation

After 15 years as a Process Engineer in the semiconductor industry (OSAT), I transitioned into the education sector only to face a staggering reality: a world run on manual labor and inefficient workflows. This post chronicles my journey of "Productive Laziness"—how I am applying engineering principles and automation tools like Python, Flask, and Google Apps Script to replace outdated manual tasks with high-precision, data-driven systems.

1. 15년의 설계, 그리고 예기치 못한 떨림

대학에서 물리학을 전공하고 LASER 테크 기업에서의 1년, 그리고 반도체 후공정(OSAT) 분야에서 프로세스 엔지니어로 14년. 도합 15년이라는 시간 동안 저는 오차와 에러를 허용하지 않는 정밀한 세계에 몸담아 왔습니다.

그런 제 인생에 작은 균열이 생긴 건 주말마다 지인들의 자녀들을 멘토링하며 가르치던 시간이었습니다. 아이들의 성적이 오르고 배움의 즐거움을 깨닫는 모습을 지켜보는 일은, 회사에서의 승진이나 연봉 인상이 주던 성취감과는 비교할 수 없는 뜨거운 무언가를 제 가슴에 심어주었습니다. 결국 저는 15년의 엔지니어 커리어를 뒤로하고, '과학 강사'이라는 새로운 도전을 결심하게 되었습니다.

2. "선생님보다는 시스템이 더 필요합니다"

과학 강사로서의 새로운 출발을 위해 마주한 인천 송도의 학원 면접 자리. 하지만 학원 대표님은 제 이력을 보시고는 뜻밖의 제안을 건네셨습니다.

"지금 우리 학원에는 과학 강사보다 이 복잡한 현장을 시스템화해 줄 전문가가 더 절실합니다."

그렇게 저는 '과학 강사' 대신, 엔지니어의 시각으로 학원 전체를 조망하고 관리하는 '관리자'로서 인생 2라운드를 시작하게 되었습니다.

3. 시스템 없는 현장, 엔지니어가 마주한 충격

출근 첫날, 제가 목격한 광경은 실로 당혹스러웠습니다. 학원의 생존과 직결된 휴원 및 퇴원 데이터 관리가 오로지 '수작업'으로 이루어지고 있었기 때문입니다.

한 달치 메신저 기록을 일일이 드래그하여 정리하는 업무. 심지어 '전체 선택(Ctrl+A)'조차 작동하지 않는 환경에서 담당자는 며칠 밤을 새우며 그 작업을 해내고 있었습니다.

"원래 이렇게 하는 건가요?"라는 저의 질문에 돌아온 대답은 "네, 늘 이렇게 해왔고 이거 하는 날은 전날 밤을 새워야 해요"였습니다. 효율과 수율이 생명인 반도체 공정에서는 상상조차 할 수 없는 '비효율의 극치'를 목격한 순간이었습니다.

4. 왜 이렇게 해야만 할까? 게으른 엔지니어의 반격

ChatGPT가 세상에 처음 나왔을 때, 저는 일주일간 AI와만 대화하며 밤을 지새웠던 기억이 납니다. 난해한 질문으로 시작된 대화는 곧 사무 자동화에 필요한 엑셀 함수를 넘어 Python 코딩으로 이어졌습니다.

밤새 드래그를 반복하는 동료를 보며 제 머릿속에는 단 하나의 질문만이 맴돌았습니다. "왜 이렇게 하고 있지? 더 쉽고 정확한 방법은 없을까?"

위대한 발명은 어느 게으름뱅이의 귀찮음에서 시작되었다는 말이 있습니다. 저는 이제 그 '기분 좋은 게으름'을 학원 현장에 적용해 보려 합니다. 수동의 고단함을 자동의 편리함으로, 감에 의존하는 관리를 데이터 기반의 시스템으로 바꾸는 여정.

Python과 Flask, slack 그리고 Google Apps Script가 그려낼 스마트한 교육 현장의 기록, 이제 그 첫 페이지를 넘깁니다.

From Process Engineer to Smart Academy Manager: My Life Round 2

1. 15 Years of Precision: A Shift in Perspective

I spent 15 years in a world where there was absolutely no room for error. After majoring in Physics, I began my career with a year at a laser technology firm, followed by 14 years as a Process Engineer in the semiconductor back-end (OSAT/Packaging) industry. For a decade and a half, my professional identity was defined by the rigorous pursuit of efficiency and technical perfection.

The turning point in my life began through weekend mentoring for the children of close acquaintances. Witnessing their grades rise and their passion for learning ignite provided a sense of fulfillment that no corporate promotion or salary hike could ever match. Eventually, I made the bold choice to leave my 15-year engineering career behind to pursue a new challenge as a science instructor.

2. "We Need a System More Than an Instructor"

My "Life Round 2" officially started at a job interview for a science instructor position in Songdo, Incheon. However, after reviewing my background, the CEO made an unexpected proposal:

"What this academy needs right now isn't just another science instructor—it's an expert who can systematize our complex operations."

And so, my path shifted. Instead of strictly teaching in a classroom, I stepped into the role of a manager, viewing and optimizing the entire academy through the eyes of an engineer.

3. Culture Shock: A World Without Systems

On my very first day, I was floored by what I witnessed. Critical data regarding student enrollment and withdrawals—the lifeblood of the business—was being managed entirely by hand.

I watched a staff member manually dragging and copying a month’s worth of messenger logs because even a basic "Ctrl+A" (Select All) command didn't work in their environment. When I asked if this was standard procedure, the answer was heartbreaking: "Yes, we've always done it this way. I usually have to pull an all-nighter just to finish this." Coming from the semiconductor industry, where yield and efficiency are everything, this was the height of inefficiency.

4. Work Smarter, Not Harder: The Engineer's Counterattack

When ChatGPT first debuted, I spent an entire week immersed in conversation with the AI. Our dialogue evolved from abstract curiosity to practical office automation, leading me deep into Python coding. Watching my colleagues struggle with mindless manual labor, I kept asking myself: "Why are we doing it this way? Isn't there a smarter, more accurate solution?"

They say the greatest inventions come from "lazy" people who are tired of doing things the hard way. I have decided to bring that "productive laziness" to the educational field. My journey is about replacing exhausting manual tasks with the ease of automation and moving from intuition-based management to data-driven systems.
